Investigation into Shooting of Armed Suspect at 11032 Spottswood Drive
January 4, 2020 - Charges are pending against a male suspect shot by Houston police officers after he pointed a gun at officers at 11032 Spottswood Drive about 6:40 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 3).
The suspect, Paul Robinson (b/m, 34), is facing pending charges of aggravated assault of a police officer and felon in possession of a weapon. Robinson sustained gunshot wounds and was transported by Life Flight helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he remains in critical, but stable condition. A booking photo of Robinson is not available for release at this time.
Five HPD officers who discharged their duty weapons were not injured. The officers are S. Lusk, M. Hewitt, G. Chappell, C. Carlson and J. Adavasio. All are assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division. Officer Adavasio was sworn in as an officer in April 2016, Officer Carlson in January 2018, Officer Hewitt in December 2018, and Officers Lusk and Chappell in July 2019.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant J. Hekimian and Officers I Ulloa and J. Brown reported:
Officers responded to an assault in-progress with a weapon call at a residence at the above address and met with the homeowner they believed fit the description of the suspect listed on the call slip. After speaking with the homeowner, the officers were given permission to check the residence to ensure nobody was injured and that the actual suspect was not inside the home.
As officers were checking the perimeter of the residence, they encountered a male (suspect Robinson) in the backyard holding a semiautomatic weapon to his neck. The suspect moved into a shed in the backyard and refused to comply with multiple commands by officers to drop his weapon. The suspect continued to make statements about killing himself and requested his girlfriend be allowed to come to the backyard. The suspect then lowered the weapon from his neck and pointed it in the direction of officers. Five officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect multiple times. Officers immediately administered first aid to the suspect who was then transported to the hospital.
As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
