Suspect Arrested, Charged in Incident at 1100 Hadley
January 8, 2020 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in an incident in which a Houston Police officer discharged his duty weapon at an armed suspect at 1100 Hadley Street about 1:05 p.m. on Monday (January 6).
The suspect, Kenneth Dwayne Jefferson (b/m, 30), is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant in the 230th State District Court. Following treatment at an area hospital, he was booked into the Harris County/City of Houston Joint Processing Center on Tuesday (January 7). A booking photo of Jefferson is attached to this news release.
Sergeant W. Dunn, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in this incident. Sgt. Dunn was sworn in as an HPD officer in March 1994 and is assigned to the Homicide Division.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant J. Hekimian and Detectives I. Ulloa, J. Brown, and R. Lujan reported:
Sergeant Dunn was off duty and working an extra job in a parking lot at 1100 Hadley, providing security for employees leaving and returning from lunch. While there, he observed two males chasing another male into the entrance of the parking lot. As they reached the gate entrance, Sergeant Dunn observed the two males knock the third male to the ground and then get on top of him. One of the males then struck the victim on the ground with the barrel of a pistol.
Sergeant Dunn, in full uniform, exited his vehicle and identified himself as an HPD officer. At that time, the armed suspect turned and pointed the gun at Sergeant Dunn, who, fearing for his safety, discharged his duty weapon one time. All three males fled on foot. Based upon blood on the ground, it was believed the suspect had been struck. Further investigation led to the location of Jefferson in a Galveston hospital and he was subsequently arrested and charged in this case.
As is customary when a HPD officer discharges his weapon and strikes a suspect, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the HPD Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
