Suspect, Arrested, Charged in Shooting Incident at 2600 Alabama

April 15, 2019 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in an incident in which a Houston police officer discharged a weapon at 2600 Alabama Street about 10:15 a.m. on Saturday (April 13).

The suspect, Shelldrix Middleton (b/m, 17), is charged with one count of unlawful carrying of a weapon and one count of evading arrest.  The charges are filed in Harris County Criminal Court #1.  A booking photo of Middleton is attached to this news release.

Sergeant J. Sneed, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident.  Sergeant Sneed was sworn in as an HPD officer in November 2006 and is assigned to the Gang Division Crime Reduction Unit.

HPD Special Investigations Unit Detectives R. De LaRosa, M. Rodriguez and J. Villareal reported:

Sergeant Sneed and his partner were conducting an investigation in an area near the above address known for narcotics activity and saw a male leaning against the driver's side door of a red vehicle in the parking lot of a food store.  Believing him to be engaged in narcotics activity, officers exited their patrol vehicle and approached him.   The suspect began to walk away from the officers, then took off running.  One officer pursued the suspect on foot while Sgt. Sneed got back into his patrol vehicle and attempted to catch up to the suspect.

The suspect ran west and into a vacant lot in the 2600 block of Alabama.  At that time, Sgt. Sneed saw the suspect was armed with a gun and running toward the officer pursuing on foot.  Fearing the suspect was going to shoot the officer, Sgt. Sneed discharged his duty weapon at the suspect and struck him in the leg.  Paramedics transported the suspect to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was treated and released.  No officers were injured.  The suspect's weapon was recovered at the scene.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
