Suspect Arrested, Charged in Incident at 8700 Duffield Lane
July 24, 2018 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in an incident in which a Houston police officer discharged a weapon at 8700 Duffield Lane about 2:50 p.m. on Monday (July 23).
The male suspect, 16, has been referred to Harris County juvenile probation authorities on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and felony evading arrest. A photo of the suspect is not available, as he is a juvenile.
The officer who discharged his duty weapon, Officer E. Bertrand, is assigned to the Westside Patrol Division and was sworn in as an officer in August 2015. Officer Bertrand was not injured in this incident.
HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit Senior Police Officer G. Garcia and Officers M. Seay and R. Lujan reported:
Officer Bertrand was assisting in an investigation regarding a vehicle stolen in an aggravated robbery. Officer Bertrand approached the driver of the vehicle who then sped towards him. Fearing for his life, Officer Bertrand discharged his duty weapon one time, striking the vehicle's windshield, but not the suspect. The suspect then fled the scene with Officer Bertrand attempting to pursue. The suspect crashed into a nearby tree, exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot before he was apprehended.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit and the Internal Affairs Division.
