Investigation into Incident at 5800 Cochran
January 4, 2017 - Houston police are investigating an incident in which an off-duty Harris County Precinct 6 deputy constable discharged a weapon as he confronted a burglary suspect in the 5800 block of Cochran about 8:50 p.m. on Wednesday (January 3).
The suspect, described only as a white male, was not injured and fled the scene.
The Precinct 6 deputy constable, who was not in uniform, was not injured in the incident.
HPD Homicide Division Detectives R. De La Rosa and O. Garcia-Chavez reported:
HPD patrol officers responded to a request for assistance by an officer at the above address and met with the off-duty Harris County Precinct 6 deputy constable. The deputy told police he went outside his residence to his vehicle and saw a male suspect burglarizing his neighbor's car. The deputy retrieved his off-duty weapon from his vehicle and approached the suspect. The deputy identified himself as a deputy and gave the suspect verbal commands to show his hands and step out of the vehicle. The suspect exited the vehicle, but began walking away.
The deputy followed the suspect on foot and found himself close to the suspect. At some point, the suspect raised his arms and deflected the deputy's weapon away, causing it to point upward and discharge. Neither the off-duty deputy nor the suspect were struck by the gunfire. The suspect fled the scene.
Anyone with information on this case or the wanted suspect is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
