Investigation into Shooting Incident at 3200 Cliffdale
February 17, 2017 - Houston police are investigating the shooting of an armed suspect by an off-duty HPD officer at 3200 Cliffdale about 11:50 a.m. on Thursday (February 16).
The suspect was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he remains in critical, but stable condition. His identity is pending further investigation.
Senior Police Officer B. Johnson, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured. Officer Johnson was sworn in as an officer in February 1994 and is assigned to the South Central Patrol Division.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeants E. Cisneros and M. Dillingham reported:
An off-duty HPD officer was informed by his alarm company that his residence was being burglarized. The officer advised the alarm company to dispatch police to his residence and he (the officer) began to drive to his residence.
While en route to his residence, the off-duty officer was able to view the burglary in-progress from his cell phone via his surveillance cameras. Once the officer arrived in the 3200 block of Cliffdale, he observed the same male from the surveillance footage walking approximately one block from his residence, carrying personal items that appeared to be from his residence.
The off-duty officer, in full uniform, confronted the male and a physical altercation ensued. When the male brandished a silver steel object, the off-duty officer discharged his weapon, striking the male more than once in his upper torso. Paramedics transported the male to the hospital.
As is customary when an officer discharges a weapon causing injury in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
