Suspect Arrested, Charged in Shooting Incident at 5098 Bingle

May 23, 2016 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested for pointing a weapon at Houston police officers in a shooting incident in the 5000 block of Bingle at about 11:30 a.m. last Friday (May 20).

The suspect, Dustin Salinas (P/m, 22), sustained at least one gunshot wound and was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital.  Salinas is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in the 232nd State District Court.  A photo of Salinas is not available for release at this time.

Senior Police Officer J. Rodriguez, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident.  Officer Rodriguez, assigned to the Gang Division, was sworn in as an officer in December 2003.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeants M. Brady and J. Burton reported:

HPD robbery investigators observed a robbery suspect (Salinas) leave an apartment complex in northwest Houston.  The investigators requested assistance from HPD marked patrol units, who then attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle on the service road of the Northwest Freeway (U.S. Highway 290) at Bingle.  When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, later found to be stolen, the suspect jumped out of the driver's side of the vehicle with a pistol in his hand.  The suspect dropped his pistol and then ran back to retrieve the gun.  After he picked up the gun, the suspect turned to the officers and pointed his pistol in their direction.  Officer Rodriguez, who was pursuing the suspect, fearing for his safety and for the safety of those around him, discharged his duty weapon more than one time.  The suspect was wounded and then transported to the hospital.  His pistol was recovered at the scene.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
