HPD Puts the Brakes on Burglary of Motor Vehicle Suspects

June 7, 2016 - Charges have been filed against two suspects arrested believed responsible for multiple burglaries of motor vehicles (BMVs) in the southwest Houston area.

One suspect, Joseph Hearn (b/m, 57), is charged with burglary of a motor vehicle and possession/unlawful use of a criminal instrument in Harris County Criminal Court #1.  The other suspect, Kevin Crooks (b/m, 52), is charged with theft in the 262nd State District Court.  Both were taken into custody last Wednesday (June 1) without incident.

Officers were alerted to a suspicious vehicle involved in several BMVs on the west side of Houston.  Witnesses provided officers a photo of a Jeep sport utility vehicle seen in the parking lot of the Chinese Community Center at 9800 Town Park Drive, where another vehicle was reported as being burglarized.  Acting on this information, officers in the HPD Westside Tactical and Gang Units conducted a proactive investigation, located the vehicle and set up surveillance.

During the investigation, the two male suspects (Hearn and Brooks), one the driver and the other a back seat passenger, drove to several banks and convenience stores in the area.  Officers then witnessed the suspects looking into various vehicles in the parking lots.  The suspects then drove to a bank at 13070 Bellaire, where they followed a customer's a silver Toyota Highlander to the Hong Kong Market at 11200 Bellaire.  Officers witnessed the back seat passenger (Crooks) get out of the Jeep with a bag in his hand and break into the Highlander.  Crooks then got back into the Jeep and the two suspects fled the scene.

The suspect vehicle description and information about the burglary was immediately broadcast over police radio.  HPD patrol officers stopped the Jeep on Bellaire near Boone Road and Hearns and Crooks were taken into custody without incident.
