Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Crash at 17890 Katy Freeway
December 28, 2015 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash that occurred at 17890 Katy Freeway (West Interstate Highway 10) about 6:15 p.m. on Saturday (Dec. 26).
The suspect, Gustavo Aybar (P/m, 30), is charged with endangering a child and possession of a controlled substance in the 262nd State District Court. A photo of Aybar is not available at this time.
The female victim, 65, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant P. Kopulos and Officer O. Sulaiman reported:
The suspect, Aybar, was traveling westbound in white Cadillac CTS at a high rate of speed at the above address. He was possibly racing the driver of a gray Toyota Camry when he lost control of the Cadillac and struck a gray Nissan Versa. The Nissan then overturned and crashed into a freeway retaining wall, killing the front seat passenger. The Cadillac then also struck a gray Honda Accord.
The driver of the Nissan was transported by Lifeflight helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in stable condition. A 3-year-old passenger in the Cadillac was not harmed.
Suspect Aybar and the driver of the Toyota were detained at the scene and exhibited no obvious signs of impairment. Aybar was found with marijuana in his possession and subsequently arrested and charged.
The investigation is continuing.
