September 8, 2014 - Houston police are investigating an incident in which a suspect and an on-duty Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) lieutenant discharged weapons at 13026 Greens Bayou about 11:40 a.m. on Sunday (September 7).

The HCSO lieutenant was not injured in this incident.  It is unknown if the suspect was injured.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant W. Meeler and Senior Police Officer J. Villareal reported:

The lieutenant was traveling southbound on Normandy Road near the East Freeway (East Interstate Highway 10) when he witnessed a gray Dodge Durango strike another vehicle and then flee the scene.  The lieutenant then followed the Durango to get its license plate.  The Durango then crashed into a light pole and the lieutenant then exited his vehicle to identify the driver (suspect).  The suspect exited the Durango, armed with a handgun, and began to approach the lieutenant.  The lieutenant identified himself as a peace officer and gave multiple commands to the suspect to stop and drop the weapon.  The suspect refused to drop the weapon and the lieutenant, in fear of his life, discharged his weapon.  The suspect then fired shots at the lieutenant.  The suspect and his male passenger then fled on foot.

The suspect is described only as a Hispanic male in his late 20s to early 30s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a medium build, black hair and a mustache.  The passenger is described only as a Hispanic male in his late 40s to early 50s.  Both males remain at-large.

As is customary when a law enforcement officer discharges a weapon within the city limits, the HPD Homicide Division is investigating the incident.
