HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant D. Usher and Officer J. Simmerman reported:
The suspect was driving a gray Scion tC the wrong way on Bingle (south in the northbound lanes) when his vehicle struck a gray Chevrolet Equinox. Mr. James, a passenger in the Equinox, was transported to North Cypress Medical Center where he was pronounced dead two days later (on April 6). The suspect was initially taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital and then to the HPD jail.
On April 10, the suspect (Quintanilla-Riva), no longer in jail, was charged with intoxicated manslaughter in the 209th State District Court. Investigators were notified on Sunday that Quintanilla-Riva was detained by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents in Arizona as he attempted to cross the border into Mexico. Officers with the Tucson Police Department contacted HPD to confirm Quintanilla-Riva's warrant and he now awaits transport back to Houston.
