February 15, 2014 - Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident at 7200 Gulf Freeway (South Interstate Highway 45) about 7:35 a.m. on Sunday (Feb. 16).

The identity of the male victim, 42, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant K. Harris and Officer D. Ashford reported:

The victim was driving an 18-wheel fuel tanker truck. As he exited the Gulf Freeway to the South Loop East, the truck struck a guardrail at the entrance ramp. The tanker truck overturned and exploded into flames. The driver of the truck exited his vehicle and attempted to run to safety, but witnesses said he was engulfed in flames and collapsed. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident. The investigation is continuing.
