September 02, 2013 - Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed suspect by an HPD officer at 9290 Woodfair about 7:10 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 1).
The identity of the male, 28, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. He was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was pronounced dead this morning (Sept. 2), several hours after undergoing surgery.
The officer who discharged his duty weapon, J. Medina, was not injured. He was sworn in as an officer in June 2012 and is assigned to the Westside Patrol Division.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant R. Blain and Officer I. Duplechain reported:
Officer Medina and a second officer responded to a disturbance with a weapon (gun) call at the apartment complex at the above address. Upon arrival, several males identified the suspect and informed officers he was armed with a gun. The officers gave verbal commands to the suspect to remove his hands from his pockets. The suspect pulled a firearm from his pocket. The officers then gave verbal commands for the suspect to drop the weapon, but he refused and instead raised the gun toward officers. At that time, Officer Medina, fearing for his life and that of his partner, discharged his weapon multiple times, striking the suspect. Paramedics were called and transported the suspect to the hospital.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shootings in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
