June 17, 2013 - Charges have been filed against a suspect wounded by a Houston police officer after the suspect stabbed and assaulted a woman at 8875 West Bellfort about 10:20 p.m. on Saturday (June 15).
The suspect, Dhafir Rasheed (b/m, DOB: 10-17-78), is charged with aggravated assault of a family member in the 263rd State District Court. He is accused in the stabbing and assault of his girlfriend, 34.
The suspect and victim were transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where doctors stated both are expected to survive their injuries. A photo of suspect Rasheed is not available at this time.
The officer who discharged his duty weapon, G. Potter, was not injured in the incident. Officer Potter, assigned to the South Gessner Patrol Division, was sworn in as an officer in September 2010.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. McStravick, Senior Police Officer T. Andrade and Officer L. Wright reported:
The victim drove her car into the parking lot at the above address where she apparently was attacked with a box cutter by her passenger and boyfriend, Rasheed. At one point, the victim escaped from the vehicle, but Rasheed caught her and dragged her across the parking lot, back to the vehicle. Witnesses called 911 to report the incident to police. Two HPD patrol officers arrived at the location and observed Rasheed stabbing the victim with the box cutter. The officers approached Rasheed and gave verbal commands, ordering him to stop the attack. Instead, the suspect refused to comply and put the vehicle in reverse. The victim, at this point, was on the ground next to the vehicle. Officer Potter, observing the victim was in the path of the vehicle, discharged his weapon in an attempt to prevent further injury to the female victim. The woman appears to have been struck by the vehicle as the vehicle reversed and then came to a stop after Rasheed was wounded.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents involving injury in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
