The victim, Ahmad Said Naser, 54, of Pearland, was pronounced dead at the scene.
HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant J. Tapia and Officer S. Tran reported:
Lovell was driving a white Toyota Tundra pickup truck southbound on the Southwest Freeway when he drove around a barricade set up by Mr. Naser, a tow truck driver. The victim was blocking traffic for a stalled gray Toyota Corolla in the center lanes of traffic and a white Ford Wrecker flatbed truck that was attempting to tow the stalled Corolla. As Lovell drove around the barricade, he struck the Corolla and crushed the vehicle underneath the rear of the flatbed wrecker. The driver and passenger were exiting the Corolla at the time of the crash as Naser was entering the Corolla in order to assist the flatbed truck operator. Nasser was inside the Corolla at the time of impact and died at the scene. The female driver of the Corolla was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital for treatment of her injuries. The passenger sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Lovell was found to be intoxicated at the scene and was taken into custody.
