October 1, 2012 - Houston police are investigating the apparent suicide of a man at 12619 Verdant Brook about 2:40 a.m. today.

The male, Marcelo Maldonado, 51, of the above address, died at the scene.

HPD Homicide Division Officers J. Villareal and J. Horn reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a family disturbance with a wepaon call at the above address. When officers arrived, family members escorted one of the officers to the master bedroom. Officers knocked on the door and then heard a gunshot. Officers then forced entry into the bedroom and found Mr. Maldonado had suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Because an HPD officer was present at the time of a citizen's death, this incident is being investigated as an in-custody death. As is customary in such cases, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions.
