HPD Homicide Division Officers C. Cardenas, I. Ulloa and C. Porshe reported:
Ms. Cruz-Rojas was at work at the above location when Sosa-Ruiz entered the business, shot her and then fled the scene. According to witnesses, the couple, who was in a relationship and had two small children, had been arguing throughout the day.
Investigators learned the suspect was a state-certified armed security officer and had a concealed handgun license.
Further investigation determined Sosa-Ruiz fled to Florida. Last Friday (Nov. 4), he abandoned his vehicle and stole a boat in an attempt to return to his native Cuba. Florida officials provided all maritime traffic with a description of the stolen boat and Sosa-Ruiz and, later that day, he was located in the boat and drifting at sea approximately three miles from Cuban waters. HPD Homicide Division investigators were notified Sosa-Ruiz had taken his own life with a gunshot to the chest as vessels from the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement approached.
The joint investigation involving the HPD Homicide Division and Florida and federal authorities is continuing.
