Armed Suspect Charged in Incident at 11400 North Freeway January 19, 2010 - Charges have been filed against a suspect who pointed a shotgun at a male victim outside a business at 11400 North Freeway (Interstate Highway 45 North) service road and was wounded by Houston police officers about 2:15 a.m. on Monday (Jan. 18). The suspect, Mario Hector Deanda II, (H/m, DOB: 11-29-86 ), is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the 182nd State District Court and was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital in serious condition. Neither two HPD officers who discharged their weapons, J. Estrada and F. Briones, nor the male victim, 23, were injured. Officer J. Estrada, assigned to the Northwest Division was sworn in as an officer in August 2000. Officer F. Briones, assigned to the Investigators First Responders Unit was sworn in as an officer in December 2001. HPD Homicide Division Sergeant D. Ferguson and Senior Police Officer R. Martinez reported: Officers Estrada and Briones were working an extra job at Club Amazonia and attempting to clear club patrons from the parking lot when they saw a disturbance involving individuals in two vehicles. The officers approached the two vehicles and saw the suspect get out of a vehicle, proceed to the vehicle's trunk and retrieve a shotgun. The suspect approached the victim's vehicle as he (victim) was still seated behind the wheel and pointed the shotgun at the victim. Officers approached the suspect just as the suspect pointed the shotgun at the victim. At that time, the victim suddenly placed his vehicle into reverse and backed away from the suspect. Officers gave verbal commands to the suspect to drop the shotgun, but all orders given to the suspect were ignored. Fearing for their safety and those in the parking lot, the officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect. Paramedics were called immediately and transported the suspect to the hospital. As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
