HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant D. Couch and Officer M. Rios reported:
Two wreckers, a tow truck and a flatbed truck, were assisting a motorist who had run out of gas. The three vehicles were on the shoulder of the inbound lanes of Spur 527, the portion of the freeway that leads into downtown off the Southwest Freeway. While they were helping the driver of the stalled vehicle, a gray Honda Accord slammed into the back of the flatbed wrecker. The wrecker was knocked into the tow truck, which was parked in between the flatbed and the stalled vehicle. The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the flatbed, sitting in the driver seat upon impact, suffered apparent minor injuries and was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital. No one else was injured.
