Aggravated Assault of HPD Officer at 7300 Airport

November 23, 2009 - Charges have been filed against a burglary suspect arrested for the aggravated assault of a Houston police officer at 7300 Airport about 6:05 a.m. on Saturday (Nov. 21).

Wilbert Lee Cunningham, (b/m, DOB: 5-8-42), is charged with aggravated assault of a public servant in the 337th State District court.

Officer G.L. Siens, who discharged his duty weapon, received cuts and bruises to his knee. He was sworn in as an officer in December 1982 and is assigned to the Narcotics Division.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant C. Elliott and Senior Police Officer A. Mares reported:

The officer, working an approved extra job at 7300 Airport, saw Cunningham enter an enclosed work yard and begin to steal scrap metal. As the officer attempted to arrest Cunningham, he got in his vehicle and tried to escape by driving in the direction of the officer. In fear of his life and safety, the officer discharged his duty weapon, striking the front of the vehicle. Cunningham continued driving forward and struck the officer before stopping the vehicle. Cunningham then got out of the vehicle and struggled with the officer, who was able to arrest him.

Cunningham has previously been arrested for theft of scrap metal at this same location.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shootings occurring in the city limits, this case will be investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
