Charges Filed in 1994 Murder at 6603 Fuqua July 23, 2009 - Charges have been filed against a suspect in the fatal shooting of a man at 6603 Fuqua on April 24, 1994. The suspect, Michael Deshawn Winfrey (b/m, DOB: 4-24-73), is charged with capital murder in the 240th State District Court of Fort Bend County. Winfrey is currently in custody at the Texas Department of Corrections Central Unit on unrelated crimes. The victim, Jefferey Brown, 30, of Houston, suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. HPD Homicide Division Sergeant B. J. Harris and Senior Police Officer D. R. Shorten reported: On April 24, Mr. Brown, accompanied by his 8-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son, pulled into a parking lot to use a pay phone. As he opened his car door, Winfrey pulled out a gun, pointed it at Brown’s son and told Brown to give up his gold or he would kill his son. Brown got in front of his son and asked Winfrey not to hurt him. Winfrey then shot Brown and fled the scene. This case remained open for 15 years and in July 2009, investigators with the Scott Police Department near Lafayette, Louisiana, obtained information from a male witness who stated he could identify the shooter (Winfrey) and others who witnessed the shooting of Brown. HPD homicide investigators then traveled to Louisiana, located all of Winfrey’s friends and obtained statements, which were consistent with evidence found at the scene. There are two remaining witnesses, who were 17 at the time of the incident, whom investigators would like to question. Anyone with additional information on this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600. VHS/JFC
