Suspects Arrested in Incident at 8787 Hammerly December 9, 2009 - Two suspects have been arrested following an incident at 8787 Hammerly about 9:10 p.m. on Tuesday (Dec. 8) in which a Houston police officer discharged his duty weapon at an armed suspect. The two male suspects, 18 and 21, were taken into custody at the scene and are under investigation in this case. A possible third suspect remains at large. Sergeant S. F. Red, who was not injured in this incident, discharged his duty weapon. He is assigned to the Tactical Operations Division and was sworn in as an officer in December 1980. HPD Homicide Division Sergeant J. Rubio and Officer R. Figueroa reported: Sergeant Red was on the property of the Hammerly Walk Apartments at 8787 Hammerly searching for possible robbery suspects from a previous call at a nearby location. Acting on information relayed to patrol units, he found a vehicle matching the description of the suspects’ vehicle. As the sergeant approached the vehicle, he saw two males, one holding a pistol, walking away from the vehicle. The armed suspect then turned towards the sergeant with the pistol in his hand. Believing his safety was in danger, Sergeant Red discharged his duty weapon at least once but did not strike the suspects. Both suspects then fled on foot and were taken into custody shortly after. As is customary when an HPD officer discharges a weapon in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Division.
