Officer-Involved Shooting at 9797 Leawood #701 December 15, 2008 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested following a robbery that resulted in the wounding of the suspect by an on-duty Houston Police officer at 9797 Leawood #701 about 7:30 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 12). The suspect, Patrick Jerome Mczeal (b/m, DOB: 9-6-90), is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in the 338th State District Court. Mczeal suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh and was transported to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, where he was treated then taken into custody. Officer J. Jaramillo, who discharged his weapon, was not injured. Officer Jaramillo, assigned to the Westside Patrol Division, was sworn in as an officer in December 2002. HPD Homicide Division Sergeant R.D. Chandler and Senior Police Officer L. K. Lovelace reported: While responding to an unrelated disturbance call at 9797 Leawood, Officer Jaramillo witnessed an aggravated robbery in progress by Mczeal. Officer Jaramillo approached Mczeal from behind, identified himself as a police officer and told Mczeal to drop his weapon. Mczeal spun around quickly towards the officer and pointed his weapon in the officer’s direction. Fearing for his life and that of the robbery victim, Officer Jaramillo fired his duty weapon several times and struck Mczeal once. Mczeal then fled the scene on foot. Officer Jaramillo chased Mczeal in his patrol vehicle while he called for backup. Patrol officers then took Mczeal into custody and he was transported to the hospital. As is customary with HPD officer-involved shootings in the city limits, the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident. |
