Suspect Charged in HPD Officer’s Murder at 5801 West Sunforest December 08, 2008 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of an on-duty Houston police officer at 5801 West Sunforest about 8:40 a.m. on Sunday (Dec. 7). HPD Officer Timothy S. Abernethy, 43, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at Memorial Hermann Hospital. The suspect, Mabry Joseph Landor III (b/m, DOB: 8-31-80), was arrested within an hour of the shooting and is charged with capital murder of a police officer in the 209th State District Court. HPD Homicide Division Sergeant G. Gonzales and Officer J. Sosa reported: Officer Abernethy conducted a traffic stop on the suspect’s vehicle in the parking lot of the Luxor Park Apartments at 5801 West Sunforest. The suspect ran from Officer Abernethy and into the apartment complex. During the foot pursuit, the suspect fired multiple shots, striking Officer Abernethy. Suspect Landor was located within an hour of the shooting and was arrested in the area of his residence and brought back to the scene where he was identified. Landor has made an admission of his involvement in Officer Abernethy’s murder. The suspect stated he discarded the weapon, a pistol, within miles of the shooting scene.
