Suspect Fatally Shot at 1200 West Tidwell April 11, 2008 - Houston police are investigating an aggravated assault on an off-duty HPD officer that resulted in the fatal shooting of a male suspect at 1200 West Tidwell about 1:25 a.m. today. The suspect suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office. Sergeant Charles W. Jones, sworn in as an officer in December 1983 and assigned to the North Patrol Division was off-duty and in plain clothes when he discharged his firearm at the suspect. Sergeant Jones was not injured in the incident. HPD Homicide Division Sergeants P.J. LeBlanc and M.W. McStravick, and Senior Police Officer R. Trevino reported: Sergeant Jones was visiting a friend at the Tidwell Estates Apartments when he heard a noise in the parking lot. Sergeant Jones looked out a window and saw the suspect breaking into his friend’s vehicle. The sergeant exited the apartment and could no longer see the suspect. Thinking the suspect had run off, Sergeant Jones approached the vehicle. As he got closer the sergeant saw the suspect still in the vehicle. Sergeant Jones identified himself as a police officer and gave verbal commands to the suspect. The suspect ignored the sergeant’s commands and lunged at him with a metal object, later determined to be a large screwdriver. Fearing for his life, Sergeant Jones fired his service weapon twice, striking the suspect once in the chest. As is customary in HPD officer-involved shootings in the city limits, the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney’s Office are investigating this incident. |
