Incident at 7900 Birmingham November 13, 2007 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the death of a man found at 7900 Birmingham about 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday (Nov. 6). The suspect, Matthew Freeman (b/m, DOB: 6/3/89), is charged with murder in the 248th State District Court. He is accused in the killing of Clay Chevalier, 79, of 6726 Eastland, who suffered blunt force trauma to the head and died on Saturday (Nov. 10). HPD Homicide Division Sergeant C.M. Cegielski and Officer B.W. Nabors reported: Mr. Chevalier was walking on Birmingham near Eastland Street, but was later found lying in the street with wounds to his face and head. Chevalier was initially transported to Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital, but was later transferred due to the severity of his injuries to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he died days later. During a follow-up investigation, Homicide investigators learned Matthew Freeman was the suspect in this case. Investigators also discovered Freeman assaulted Chevalier and knocked him to the ground before going through Chevalier’s pockets looking for money.
