Incident at 6500 Airline July 1, 2007 - Charges are pending against a suspect shot at by an off-duty Houston police officer after he pointed what was believed to be a pistol at the officer in the 6500 block of Airline about 2:25 a.m. today (July 1). The suspect, Miguel Angel Vargas (H/m, DOB 4/23/81), who was not injured, fled the scene and was arrested in the 700 block of Victory. Charges are pending consultation with the Harris County District Attorney's office. The officer who discharged her weapon, D.K. Hogan of the Juvenile Division, was sworn in as an officer in May 1996. She was not injured. HPD Homicide Division Sergeant J.T. Parker and Officer R.A. Moreno reported: Officer Hogan, while off-duty and driving her personal vehicle, was stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of Airline and Parker Road when she was rear-ended by Vargas who attempted to leave the scene of the accident. Officer Hogan identified herself and ordered Vargas to stop, however, he pulled an object, believed to be a pistol, from his pants and pointed it at Officer Hogan. The officer, fearing that she was in danger, discharged her service revolver striking Vargas' vehicle. No weapon was found at the time of Vargas' arrest about 90 minutes later. As is customary in officer-involved shootings in the city limits, the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions and the Harris County District Attorney’s office are investigating the case.
