Traffic Incident at 2900 North Freeway
June 10, 2006 -- Houston police
are investigating a fatal traffic accident in the 2900 block of
the North Freeway (Interstate 45 North) about 2:10 p.m. on Friday
(June 9).
The name of the deceased female victim is pending
notification to family members.
HPD Mobility Incident Management Division Sergeant
R.A. Gonzales and Officers D. Ertons and M. Lowder reported:
The accident occurred on the southbound lanes
of the freeway, just before the exit ramp to the North Sam Houston
Parkway. One motorist was south on the freeway and decided to
change lanes in order to exit onto the North Sam Houston Parkway.
When he switched lanes, he drove onto the emergency shoulder on
the outside portion of the road. He did not immediately realize
it was an emergency lane and that there was a vehicle parked in
it. He tried to avoid hitting that parked vehicle, but struck
its back left side. The female passenger in the parked vehicle
was killed upon impact. The driver of the parked vehicle was transported
to Memorial Hermann Hospital with bumps and bruises.
The driver who caused the accident was treated
at the scene by medical personnel. He was cited for being at fault
in the accident. The investigation is continuing and the case
will be presented to the Harris County District Attorney's office
for review and possible charges.
