July 28, 2006 -- Charges are
pending against a suspect who pointed a gun at two Houston police
officers at 8700 Sandra about 11:10 a.m. on Thursday (July 27).
The suspect, Atkins Hamilton III (b/m, DOB 10/18/79),
was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital with unknown injuries.
He faces possible charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer.
HPD Officers J.E. Wilmore, sworn in as an officer
in September of 1984, and A.J. Nave, sworn in as an officer in
January of 1992, are assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division.
Both officers suffered minor injuries and were transported to
a local hospital for treatment.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant T.R. Hernandez
and Officer X. Avila reported:
Officers responded to a family disturbance call
at 8709 Sandra and were met by suspect Hamilton who was on the
street. Officer Wilmore saw the suspect keep his hands behind
his back so he continued to drive away. The suspect then produced
a gun and pointed it at the officer, who warned secondary officers
arriving at the location. As Officer Nave arrived, the suspect
ran towards this officer's patrol car and pointed a gun at him.
Officer Wilmore then fired his weapon at the suspect, missing
him. As additional officers arrived, the suspect put his gun down.
Officers attempted to handcuff the suspect, but he became combative
and resisted. Officers then tasered the suspect, who continued
to struggle with officers until he was taken into custody.
Suspect Hamilton's weapon was recovered at the
scene.
