May 30, 2005 -- Houston police
are investigating the accidental shooting/injury to a child at
6826 River Bluff about 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2005.
The 9 month old child was struck by a single
shotgun blast and sustained injuries to his right upper leg and
buttocks area. The child was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital
where he was listed in stable condition.
HPD Homicide Division Officer K.P. Carr and Officer
A. Mares reported:
The child and his 2-year-old sister and 3-year-old
brother were playing in the garage at their home when the incident
occurred. The 12 gauge shotgun that had been left standing in
a corner of the garage was either knocked or fell over and discharged
one time striking the child. The child's grandmother rushed into
the garage at the sound of the blast and discovered the bleeding
child. She sought assistance from the child's grandfather who
was also in the house. The grandfather called for an ambulance.
An investigation with the Department of Child
Protective Services was opened. It was learned that CPS had a
history of complaints involving the family and the 2 and 3-year-old
children were taken out of the home and transported to the CPS
facility on Chimney Rock.
Ownership of the weapon involved has not yet
been determined and any possible charges are pending the completion
of the investigation.
