Incident at 5918 Schroeder

May 14, 2005 -- The fatal shooting of a man at 5918 Schroeder about 12:30 p.m. on Friday, May 13, 2005 will be referred to a Harris County grand jury.

The deceased male, identified as Michael L Atkins, 30, suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant P. Motard and Officer C. Addondandolo reported:

Atkins and his girlfriend arrived at her apartment at 5918 Schroeder. Both were intoxicated and she (the girlfriend) got into an altercation with others inside of the residence. She assaulted family members, turned over furniture and kicked holes in the walls. Police were called and Atkins' girlfriend was arrested and transported to jail.

Atkins, who did not live at the apartments, became upset about his girlfriend's arrest and began threatening other tenants and the family members of his girlfriend. Ultimately, Atkins threatened his girlfriend's stepfather (Kevin D. Cook), who was not involved in any of the earlier disturbances. As Atkins approached the suspect (Cook) in a threatening manner, Cook pulled a gun and shot Atkins once in the head.
