Incident at 7900 Garland
February 11, 2005 -- Houston
police are investigating an aggravated assault and felony evading
arrest that occurred at 7900 Garland on Thursday, February 10,
2005 about 11:20 p.m.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant C. E. Elliott
and Officer J. Sosa reported:
Officers of the Houston police Vice and Eastside
Patrol Divisions were conducting a "reverse sting" prostitution
detail. The suspect, Truc Tran (A/m DOB: 5-15-78), drove up to
a female undercover officer and solicited her for a sex date.
Once the solicitation case was made, a marked patrol unit approached
Tran to arrest him. The undercover officer was standing in the
open passenger door of Tran's pick-up truck at the time. Upon
seeing the patrol unit, Tran grabbed at the undercover officer
and began to rapidly back up. The officer was trapped by the open
passenger door of the truck and was being dragged underneath the
front wheel. A uniformed patrol officer
commanded Tran to stop. When Tran did not stop, the uniformed
officer, fearing for the safety of the undercover officer, fired
at Tran. The undercover officer fell away from the vehicle after
the shooting and the truck continued down the street with the
uniformed officer in pursuit. Tran lost control of his vehicle
and jumped out and ran on foot. Tran was captured after a foot
chase and placed under arrest. He was also found to be in possession
of narcotics.
The undercover officer suffered abrasions and
contusions and will be treated by a physician. Tran has been charged
with aggravated assault on a public servant and felony evading
in the 228th State District Court.
