February 1, 2005 -- Houston police continue to investigate the fatal accident that occurred in the 11000 block of the East Freeway on Monday, January 31, 2005 around 7:07 p.m.

According to the Houston Police Department Traffic and Accident investigator
Officer R. Breiding, a motorist was getting gasoline for his stalled 1997
Astro van. The van was parked on the inside shoulder of the eastbound lanes of
the East Freeway near John Ralston when a SafeClear wrecker pulled up behind
his vehicle to assist him. For some unknown reason that motorist, identified
as 77-year-old Lawrence Jo Kahng (Am/ dob 12-17-27),of 1510 Spillers Lane, who
was standing on the westbound shoulder of the freeway, dropped his gas
container and darted across the freeway to get to his stalled vehicle. As he
crossed the freeway he was struck by several other cars. He was pronounced
dead at the scene.

The motorist's van was towed to a storage lot at 16711 East Freeway.
