Patrolman Jerry L. Spruill was employed at the Silver Dollar Restaurant for an extra job at 616 Wertheimer. His duties were to patrol the area around the restaurant because the club had experienced several disorderly young people congregating around the building and creating a nuisance. Officer Spruill was seen on this, his first night on duty, talking with two unidentified men inside the restaurant. A little later, Officer Spruill walked outside to move his car when the same two suspects, whom Spruill had spoken with earlier, shot Officer Spruill several times. Officer Spruill died a few minutes later in the parking lot of the restaurant.
Officer Jerry L. Spruill, 29 years old, started to work for the Houston Police Department in 1969. He was well known and a friend of many at the North Shepherd Substation, where he was stationed.
At the time of the shooting, Officer Spruill was survived by his wife, Marcia, and two sons, Jeffery and Scott.
