POLICE Department
DWI Task Force
The primary mission of the DWI Task Force is to prevent traffic deaths.
Every year, over 10,000 people are killed by drunk and/or drug impaired drivers in this country. The HPD DWI Task Force is a dedicated group of officers that are committed to help put an end to this deadly crime. While traffic enforcement is the primary job of the unit, we place a heavy emphasis on DWI education programs as well. Our unit has been tasked with training the entire Houston Police Department when it comes to DWI related programs including Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement and the Drug Recognition Expert Program. While some if this training is mandated by the state, we strive to add additional training and education for all of our officers.
Public education is a big part of preventing DWI related deaths so our officers are involved with the Shattered Dreams programs for high school seniors and the Citizens Police Academy sponsored by HPD. We are always looking for new opportunities and partnerships to help achieve our goal of eliminating drunk driving.
