Walkable Places Pilot Areas - Midtown

Midtown was selected as one of the three pilot areas for Walkable Places. The boundary selected for Midtown is bordered by US 59 to the east and south, IH 45 to the north and Bagby Street to the west. This area was chosen because it has many of the elements that make a place walkable. Its grid design, with small block sizes that range from 300 to 500 feet, allow for higher connectivity. It offers different modes of transportation that include light rail, bus routes, bike ways, BCycle stations, rental car stations and a network of sidewalks. It is located between downtown and the medical center which drives a high volume of people and vehicles through this area. Midtown also has a mix of uses that include but are not limited to restaurants, barber shops, offices, grocery stores, parks and theatres. These elements encourage people to walk to different places or to combine walking with a different mode of transportation.

The goal of the pilot area is to build upon Midtown’s potential and to become a true Walkable Place by creating a new, unique set of development regulations within the proposed boundary. These new rules can include a variety of elements that encourage walkability and promote better, more human-scaled public spaces. Collaboration with the community and local stakeholders will help identify the elements that are most appropriate for Midtown. This project will also incorporate existing plans such as Midtown’s Management District Strategy Plan and Design Guidelines and Plan Houston.
