June 16, 2014 -- The City of Houston Department of Neighborhoods and the Houston Refugee Consortium invite the public to celebrate World Refugee Day Houston, Saturday, June 21, 2014, 3-7 p.m. at the Raindrop Foundation Turkish House, 9301 W. Bellfort Avenue 77031. The free, family friendly festival will feature a kids' zone, performances, exhibits and foods celebrating the rich cultural heritages of refugees who have made Houston their home. Houston ranks #1 as a refugee resettlement destination in the U.S. Approximately 70,000 refugees from 78 countries have resettled in the Houston area since 1978. World Refugee Day was established by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in 2001 to honor the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children forced to flee their homes under the threat of persecution, conflict and violence.
