Houston Public Library Kicks Off Winter 2024 With Nutcracker Exhibit Opening Reception

Houston Public Library (HPL), in partnership with Houston Ballet, kicks off the winter holiday season this Saturday with the opening of the exhibit Houston Ballet’s The Nutcracker Comes to Life: Staging a Houston Ballet Tradition, 1972 – Present. The exhibit opens Saturday, November 9, in the Julia Ideson Building (550 McKinney St., 77002) at 10:30 AM with a reception that includes a family-friendly Dance to Learn arts integration program and a guided tour of the exhibit.

Houstonians are invited to dive into the artistry that brings The Nutcracker to life, embrace the magic of the holidays, and learn about the choreography, set designs, and costumes that have evolved over the years, enhancing the visual and emotional impact of the performance. The exhibit showcases artifacts from each production, highlighting the creativity and dedication of the artists involved.

The programming continues throughout the month of December, when various HPL locations will host Ballet Talks, a family-friendly interactive Nutcracker experience presented by Houston Ballet. Dancers will demonstrate how to tell stories without words using the art of dance, and guide attendees through the plot of a ballet production. HPL's Central Library will host two more Dance to Learn programs in December and January.

All HPL events and exhibits are free and open to the public; registration is strongly encouraged.
