April 20, 2007 -- On July 1, 2007, the City of Houston will be converting the areas that were previously serviced under contract with Republic Waste to direct service by the City’s Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD). To incorporate these new customers most efficiently, the boundaries of the SWMD service centers have changed and the entire city will be re-routed to optimize efficiency and reduce cost. In order to take maximum advantage of the route optimization, some customers will experience a service day change for automated garbage and yard trimmings collection beginning July 1st. Residents who will experience a service day change will receive a letter in June notifying them of the change. “We also are providing the information on our website in June for everyone to confirm their service days”, said Buck Buchanan, SWMD Director. The Solid Waste Management Department’s website is www.houstonsolidwaste.org.
As a result of the acquisition of the contract area, the SWMD is currently hiring qualified CDL drivers and mechanics. For job postings, please go to www.houstontx.gov/jobs and utilize the City of Houston’s application system. The Solid Waste Management Department provides solid waste service to the citizens of Houston through the collection, disposal and recycling of discarded material in a manner that is safe, efficient, environmentally sound and cost-effective.
