Winners Announced in Solid Waste Management Department's "Growing Up Recycling" Cart Decorating Contest
The winners of the City of Houston's Solid Waste Management Department's (SWMD) 2nd Annual "Growing Up Recycling" Cart Decorating Contest were selected Saturday, March 8, 2014, at HISD's “When I Grow Up” Career Expo. This unique art competition consisted of local schools decorating 96-gallon recycling carts with recycled materials. Eleven schools participated and the winners were awarded prizes generously donated by Toter.
THE WINNERS ARE:
1st Place, winner of $500 - Sam Houston HS led by Art teacher Patti Hernandez.
2nd Place, winner of $400 - St. Thomas HS led by Science teacher Carol Connor.
3rd Place, winner of $300 - Westbury HS led by Art teacher Shelby Lenderman.
People's Choice, winner of $100 - Sam Houston HS led by Art teacher Patti Hernandez.

The contest supports the SWMD's mission of recycling and responsible waste management and provides high school students an opportunity to explore alternative means of repurposing waste items in a creative manner.
"We're excited about the great interest we received from all the schools," said Director Harry Hayes. "This contest gives the students a unique challenge highlighting environmental stewardship while finding creative ways to reuse everyday items."
Contest judges included Jeremy Moore, Mayor's Office of Sustainability; Steve Stelzer, Green Building Resource Center and Molly Block, Unconsumption.
