WINNERS ANNOUNCED IN SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT'S "GROWING UP RECYCLING" CART DECORATING CONTEST
The winners of the City of Houston's Solid Waste Management Department's (SWMD) "Growing Up Recycling" Cart Decorating Contest were selected Saturday, February 23, 2013, at HISD's Career Expo. This is the first year the contest has been held. The SWMD joined forces with the City's Human Resources Department to host the unique art competition and exhibit consisting of decorating green, 96-gallon carts with recycled materials and art supplies.
THE WINNERS ARE:
1st Place – Sam Houston High School. Also winner of the People's Choice Award
2nd Place – Chavez High School's Environmental Club led by teacher George Morrison
3rd Place – Jane Long HILZ Middle/High School
The contest supports the SWMD's mission of recycling and responsible waste management and provides talented high school students a chance to have their work seen and acknowledged.
"We're excited about the great interest we received from all the schools," said Director Harry Hayes. "This contest gave the students a unique challenge highlighting environmental stewardship while finding creative ways to reuse everyday items." The winners were chosen from a group of 11 local high schools and awarded cash prizes generously donated by Toter.
The carts are currently on display at 611 Walker and will be displayed at the Sustainable Living Fest in March and the Earth Day Houston Celebration at Discovery Green in April.
Contest judges included John Chilo, HISD; Lisa Lin, Mayor's Office of Sustainability; Reisha Beatty, Council Member Wanda Adams' Office; Steve Stelzer, Green Building Resource Center and Molly Block, Unconsumption.
