MAYOR PARKER ANNOUNCES “RE-PRIDE SUNNYSIDE”
Clean-up and Beautification Initiative Targets Sunnyside Neighborhood
Houston Mayor Annise Parker announces Re-Pride Sunnyside, a new clean-up and beautification initiative targeting one of Houston’s oldest, predominantly African American neighborhoods. The Re-Pride Sunnyside kick-off is scheduled for Saturday, March 31, 8:30 a.m., at Sunnyside Park. The event will feature a news conference, followed by the first in a series of clean-up and beautification projects targeting Sunnyside.
Spearheaded by the Mayor’s Department of Neighborhoods, District D City Council Member Wanda Adams and State Representative Borris Miles, Re-Pride Sunnyside will involve the participation of 150 student volunteers from Worthing High School. The HoustonParks and Recreation Department will provide mulch for the project.
The project will target the area bounded by the 610 South Loop, Cullen Boulevard, Reed Road and Scott Street. Future projects will extend to other parts of Sunnyside.
“Sunnyside represents a vital part of Houston’s rich history,” said Mayor Parker. “Our Department of Neighborhoods is working jointly with Council Member Adams, State Representative Miles and community leaders to make the neighborhood an attractive place for existing and new residents. It is part of the city’s commitment to revitalizing our neighborhoods.”
“We’re involving high school students in this effort to strengthen the younger generation’s pride in their neighborhood," said Council Member Adams, who represents Sunnyside. “We want to shine a positive light on the residents of Sunnyside.”
"I'm excited to be working with Worthing High School students, community residents and the Department of Neighborhoods in bringing the pride back to Sunnyside,” said State Representative Borris Miles. “This grass-roots effort is about residents improving their community and restoring the pride in our historic neighborhood."
