Reliant Light Mayor's Holiday Spectacular

2019 Press Release

CHLOE x HALLE TO HEADLINE CENTENNIAL RELIANT LIGHTS MAYOR’S HOLIDAY SPECTACULAR
Houston Holiday Celebration set for Saturday, November 30th

Mayor Sylvester Turner and Reliant will kick off the holiday season at the Reliant Lights Mayor’s Holiday Spectacular – 100 years at City Hall. The public is invited to Hermann Square at City Hall on Saturday, November 30th from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. for a FREE event perfect for the entire family. The annual event is celebrating 100 years with live music and the lighting of the holiday tree. The Reliant Lights Mayor’s Holiday Spectacular will close out Unwrap Downtown – Houston’s kick-off of holiday events downtown.

"A century of lighting up downtown for the holidays is truly spectacular and I’m thrilled to offer Houston an event trifecta this Thanksgiving weekend – a monumental parade, a Thing-A-Ma-Jingle and Reliant Lights Mayor’s Holiday Spectacular,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “It’s the perfect splash of lights, music, family, friends and it’s FREE thanks to all of our generous sponsors.”

Chloe x Halle, the Grammy-nominated duo comprised of sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey, will headline this year’s event – showcasing hits from their debut album, “The Kids Are Alright,” and holiday classics with a twist. The ladies first performed as Chloe x Halle by posting covers of pop songs on YouTube and launched their channel at the ages of 13 and 11, with a cover of Beyoncé’s “Best Thing I Never Had.” Their rendition of “Pretty Hurts” by Beyoncé went viral and drew the attention of the singer. In 2014, she signed the sisters to her management company, Parkwood Entertainment. In 2018 it was announced that they would be the opening act of the U.S. leg of Beyoncé and JAY-Z's “On The Run II” tour. The siblings have also made a name for themselves on primetime television. Wednesday nights, Chloe x Halle transform into the fictional college coeds, Jazz and Sky, on Freeform’s hit comedy, grown’ish.

“The holiday season is so special because it’s a time when family, friends and community come together to celebrate love, joy and peace. We’re honored to bring all of those things together with Reliant Lights Mayor’s Holiday Spectacular,” said Elizabeth Killinger, president, Reliant. “For more than a decade, we have partnered with the City of Houston to bring spectacular entertainment, and festivities to our great city – and of course – our favorite Reliant blinking Santa hats! This year’s centennial event will be bigger and better than ever, and we invite Houstonians to join us as we celebrate the holidays.”

The show will also include performances by Uché, a singer-songwriter from Houston that made it to the Top 10 on the 17th season of American Idol. He has opened for pop star Demi Lovato and Grammy-nominated rapper, B.O.B. The public will also enjoy a performance from Theater Under the Stars’ (TUTS) “Elf—The Musical.” The Best Little Klezmer Band in Texas will bring the past to life by reviving Yiddish music – infusing its spirited performances of Jewish folk songs and traditional dances. The Kingwood High School Madrigals will be performing, the Houston Children’s Chorus returns with Director Steve Roddy and hip-hop dance group, BGirl City will also take the stage.

Santa will be available for free photos with children in The Gingerbread Village, along with seasonal food and beverages for purchase. The public is invited to be part of the World’s Ultimate Toy Drive benefiting Toys for Tots by bringing a new, unwrapped toy to the event.   Help make the holidays brighter for a child in need this holiday season.

Sponsors include: Reliant, METRO by T-Mobile, Cigna, Raising Cane’s, Southwest Airlines, Houston First, Downtown District, Houston Parks and Recreation Department and Houston Public Library Foundation. This celebration is produced by the Mayor’s Office of Special Events.
