Houston Earns Gold Medals for Participation in Let’s Move! Cities Towns and Counties Initiative
July 8, 2015 -- The City of Houston has earned two gold medals and one bronze medal from the National League of Cities for its participation in the Let’s Move! Cities, Towns and Counties, an initiative promoting policy and environmental changes at the local government level to help prevent childhood obesity.
Houston earned the gold medals for promotion that secured increased participation in its Summer Food Service Programs and After-School Meal Program and for its Parks Master Plan proposal. The Houston Parks and Recreation Department manages both initiatives.
The bronze medal went to the Model Food Service program for identifying all food vendors and contractors at City or county-owned or operated venues that offer or sell food or beverages, along with the dates when their contracts can be amended or renegotiated.
Houston’s participation in Let’s Move Cities, Towns and Counties was coordinated by the Houston Department of Health and Human Services (HDHHS).
“As a health department, we prioritize preventing chronic diseases and work to prevent childhood obesity through promoting healthy eating and active living,” said Dr. Faith Foreman, assistant director at HDHHS.
