National Foreign Language Week

March 4 to 10, 2018

National Foreign Language Week (NFLW) is a celebration held in March that promotes the benefits and rewards that come with learning a foreign language. It has been endorsed by presidents since President Eisenhower in 1956. This year, the City of Houston’s Office of New Americans will celebrate NFLW from March 4th – 10th.

As the most diverse city in the country, over 145 foreign languages are spoken in Houston’s many vibrant neighborhoods. The City of Houston will use NFLW to highlight Houston’s linguistic diversity and to raise awareness of the benefit of learning a different language. Studies have shown that individuals who speak more than two languages have increased brain activity and add value to the workforce. But even more importantly, it can be a tremendous asset in a world where men and women of all nations must work together to solve common problems.

Several events will be held in Houston as a part of NFLW. Residents are encouraged to participate. Please visit our website ( or our tent at the City Hall Farmer’s Market on March 7th for more information!
