Our Initiatives - One Houston, One Book

One Houston, One Book (OHOB) was a citywide reading initiative of the Houston Public Library that promoted literacy, diversity, and community conversations by encouraging Houstonians to read and discuss books with a common theme.

Unique to One Houston, One Book was the deliberate inclusion of adult literacy students, a demographic normally left out of such initiative’s attendant to their limited reading proficiency.

In partnership with the Mayor’s Office for Adult Literacy, OHOB engaged individuals reading at various proficiency levels to read stories of diversity much like their own stories.

The director of MOAL, Federico Salas-Isnardi said, “We want those who don’t read often, those who may not own a book, or who may need literacy support to join us! These adults are our learners; they represent the stories of diversity that make our city; they have experiences such as the ones in the books we will read.”

The Mayor’s Office for Adult Literacy in partnership with adult literacy providers selected books at different levels to ensure that all could participate.

MOAL hosted three events at Houston Public Library branches, especially oriented to literacy providers.
Central, Stanaker, and Alief libraries hosted the events.
