May 4, 2024 -- As rising water threatens specific neighborhoods in Kingwood, the Houston Police Department Air Support Unit provided Mayor John Whitmire and Police Chief Troy Finner an aerial tour of the community Saturday afternoon.
From the air, the mayor surveyed the damage, gaining a greater sense of the needs of residents and affirmed his commitment to providing resources to Kingwood.
Mayor Whitmire is staying in touch with residents and first responders through every means possible. Furthermore, he is using his contacts to speak to Governor Abbott and Lt Governor Patrick and has had a great response from the Texas Division of Emergency Management.
"Houston residents benefit when all levels of government work together," Mayor Whitmire emphasized. "Together, we will get through these challenges. Let’s go to work!"
Houston Fire, Police, METRO, Houston Public Works, and the Office of Emergency Management are working tirelessly to monitor conditions and position high-water rescue vehicles nearby to safety.
According to the National Weather Service, more heavy rain is expected to bring the threat of more flooding to the area.
Free transportation services for evacuation are readily available, and people are urged to plan before they are inundated by high water. If you or someone you know requires transportation for evacuation, please contact 311.
